They will suffer the armor check penalty to their attacks just like a mage wearing armor would. They probably won't have have to worry about spell failure like the mage would.

Rule of thumb with armor is add the ac of the armor and either your dex bonus or the max dex of the armor, whichever is lower. So, studded leather, you add 3 + either 5 or your dex bonus, whichever is lower. With light armor it will probably be a while before you max the dex bonus on your armors, so in the early game ac is probably most important.
