Dakota sandstone.

The Dakota aquifer system consists of sandstone bodies deposited about 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. These formations are found at the surface and in the subsurface in most of the western two-thirds of Kansas. Kansans, and others in the Great Plains region, have used the Dakota as a source of water for more than a century.

After 38 years of groundwater pumping in a confined Dakota sandstone aquifer, a total volume of 110 million cubic meters has been produced. Over that period, the hydraulic head declined about 100 meters. The specific storage due to the expansion of water alone is found to be 9 x 10-7 m-1.
