I have a 2010 VW Jetta TDI and I keep getting a check engine light every 20,000 miles which turns out to be an issue with the DPF filter. The modern (common rail) TDI have a much more restrictive dpf. Even by vw maintenance schedule at 120k it says to check levels and replace as needed. They are also very picky about fuel. Unfortunately OP needing a replacement at this time is not a surprise not an outcome of anything they’re doing wrong.When it does ash up, either take it off and have it cleaned for a couple hundred bucks or replace it. A brand new DPF from VW parts websites tends to run less than $1k. Last I saw was ~$875. Big whoop. In the grand scheme of things, that's not much for a major part that'll last well into the 200-300K mileage. Looking into this on the internet, it looks like, with other manufacturers (certainly heavy trucks), cleaning a DPF is a routine matter and easily done.
