To get access to nirn: Do all main quests in lower Craglorn, then go do all main quests in upper Craglorn. You'll get 1 nirnhooned item for the end quest in Upper craggie as reward, and you can put that item for research or sell.

AFAIK, Nirnhoned items don't drop in the game, aside from the one you're awarded upon completing the Craglorn quests.

The thing that makes difference here is that reinforced increases armor rating by % while nirnhoned by flat value. So when doing your own theorycrafting experiment you take your desired item, take its base armor rating, calculate reinforced % and compare it with nirnhoned value and see which is higher. For one let me state that nirnhoned on armor would only be considered for PvP since PvE is entirely focused on damage output. Now specificity should be rewarded so Impen should remain as it; which is roughly 3.5% mitigation for a gold impen piece. However, with that said the damage mitigation provided from nirnhoned needs to be higher than <0.5%.Dec 25, 2017 · A gold, nirnhoned sword in offhand will only add about 50 wpn damage. It’s awful. You can run sharp/infused/precise on the offhand depending what you’re doing. But based off of the 7% more damage and factoring in the two spell critical chances with the 90% critical damage strength over 100 attacks Nirnhorned came out on top by about 1.5%. Nirncrux can be found in nodes (void ore, nightwood, void cloth) and on mobs that drop leather. Chances are low for nodes, it's 0.25% chance.
