They both offer excellent performance in terms of wear resistance, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. Vanax Superclean is an improvement of Elmax by adding Nitrogen and Vanadium in its alloy. But anyway, thanks to Alex's generosity I was able to play with Sebenza in MagnaCut for full 3 months last summer. I tried to put together my observations based on some notes during daily use, also against other knives.

I did a test with knives in 440A (stainless), D2 (high alloy steel with some corrosion resistance), and 1095 (no corrosion resistance). MagnaCut will be better. It will be a lot tougher (resistance to breaking, cracking and chipping), a bit more stain resistant and close in edge retention.Elmax is tougher than S30V and has better edge holding than S35VN. Elmax is made using third generation powder metallurgy stainless steel. The granule size of the metal powder is very small. Flat Ground: Any alloy that has "Flat Ground" in the description has been Blanchard ground. Our tolerances for flat grinding are +-.001" across 12".If the steel isnt treated to its ideal hrc, it might as well not even be the steel its claiming to be. Magnacut should be in the range of 63 to 65 hrc. In terms of how they match against each other, S45VN steel has slightly improved edge retention compared to S35VN steel. The improved edge retention of S45VN over S35VN is attributed to the increase in the carbide volume present in the composition of S45VN. S45VN steel has about 1% more chromium carbide volume when compared to S35VN steel.I like the deka and bugout for their own reasons.
