According to Jan Ozer of Streaming Media Magazine, AV1 is at least as good as HEVC now. AV1 appeared to be 65.7% less efficient than HEVC than the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications in late 2016, underperforming even H.264/AVC, which was found to be 10.5% more efficient by the Fraunhofer Institute.
