The 3.34” overall length for the 300 Win Mag allows it to be loaded in a long action rifle, whereas the 3.7” overall length of the 300 PRC requires a magnum action rifle. Hornady specifically designed the 300 PRC for the magnum action as they wanted their cartridge to have as long a “head height” as possible.
