I2S is used for audio applications and audio is just more complex than just the bandwidth requirements. I2S doesn't require any buffer or sync stuff and relies on the given clock by the mcu to determine sample rate. In case of SPI you'd have to use the bus 100% of the time when audio is playing so the SPI bus won't be available for anything else.
