The shift cable slides down through a cable "sheathe" (actually, a rubber hose affair). This sheathe takes the cable down below the water line and through the transom shield. From there, the cable is clamped at/to the Intermediate housing. Once through the Intermediate housing, the cable end (via a barrel fitting) attaches to the "gear yoke".
