It is the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind. For real. My university is the best in the US in my field but it doesn't have big name appeal because my field is really small. I looked through the winners in my field and I know two of them - one went to Harvard for undergrad and the other is going to Yale for graduate school, though she wasn't admitted when she submitted her application for the GRFP.
