I think Smith started "Model" numbers around 1957 or 1958. What had been the M&P revolver became Model 10. If your revolver is a Model 10, it will say so where the yoke swings out from the frame. If it's an M&P, it will just have a part number. It should have "Made in USA" or a 4 line trade mark stamp like this one, stamped on the right side over the trigger guard. With a S&W logo on the right or left side just in front of the grips. Where the model number is on MOST Smith & Wesson revolvers, this gun has the number 39246 on it. Just above that number, there is what appears to be the letter "R". The cylinder drops out to the left, and on the cylinder face it has a small "S" and then a little over from that the number 127XXX.
