The herd at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is from Wind Cave in South Dakota. The Wind Cave herd is one of only two known public herds without evidence of historical cattle interbreeding or introgression. Early conservation attempts did this to ensure their survival of the species. Bison live an average of 20-25 years.Less than 4 percent remains of its native range, which once stretched from the Gulf Coast of Texas to southern Canada. Fortunately for us in Oklahoma, these mole crickets are an endemic species to tallgrass ecosystems and we have the largest remaining protected tract at the Joseph H.
